This chart is dynamic, and you can change the usage filter in the top-right corner. For the filter selection, use 500 kWh or 1,000 kWh if you live in an apartment. Use 1,000 kWh and 2,000 kWh for medium to large houses, and 2,000 kWh to 3,000 kWh for very large houses.
This graph shows how competitive Gexa Energy’s 3 Day Free Weekends plan really is. The point where the blue area meets the orange area tells you how much of your electricity usage needs to fall inside the free window for the plan to perform about the same as a competitive fixed rate plan.
- For apartments that usually use around 500 kWh in spring or fall, you need to move more than 60% of your electricity usage into the free window just to reach a rate similar to a good fixed plan. For homes closer to 1,000 kWh, that threshold is still above 55%, which is a very demanding target. Now let’s put that into perspective. If your home used the exact same amount of electricity every day of the week, then Friday, Saturday, and Sunday would account for only about 45% of your total weekly usage. That means you would still need to shift roughly another 20% of your load from Monday through Thursday into the free window. Moving laundry, EV charging, and some cooking into the weekend can help, so it is possible, but it is still challenging.
- And what happens if you do not shift enough usage? If your split ends up closer to 50% inside the free window and 50% outside of it, your effective rate will rise quickly. In that case, you could end up paying around 20% to 25% more than with a good fixed rate plan. That is why this type of plan can be a double edged sword.
