TDU Contact and Outage Information for Lubbock

  • The main residential ZIP codes for Lubbock are 79424, 79423, 79416, 79413, 79407, 79414, 79410, 79411, 79401, 79403, 79404, 79412, and 79415. Most addresses inside the city are served by Lubbock Power & Light (LP&L). LP&L customers are now in the deregulated market, but LP&L still handles delivery, poles, wires, meters, and outage response.
  • Some addresses inside Lubbock are served by South Plains Electric Cooperative (SPEC) instead, and those customers generally do not shop in the deregulated market. Lubbock is also a newer retail-choice area, so plan selection is often narrower than in large, long-established deregulated markets in Texas. If your address is in SPEC territory, report outages to South Plains Electric Cooperative at 888-741-0111 or use the SPEC outage map: https://spec.coop/outage

Lubbock Housing & Heating Facts

Local housing and heating composition based on city profile inputs.

Median Year Built

1984

  • Lubbock has hot summers, cold winters, and much lower humidity than cities in East or South Texas. Summer temperatures usually reach the low 90s, with August around 93°F / 68°F, while winter can get cold enough to matter for heating, with January around 55°F / 29°F. That drier climate helps a little in the summer because your A/C is fighting heat more than moisture, but winter bills can still rise depending on whether your home uses gas or electric heating.
  • If you are a student and want to avoid a long contract, prepaid plans may be an option. They are usually more expensive, but the added flexibility can be worth it in certain situations. The table below shows estimated bills for True Fixed plans in your area, while prepaid plans often cost about 20% more than the cheapest local options.

Truly Fixed vs. Bill Credit vs. Time-of-Use: Which Plan Type Is Better in Lubbock?

  • New to your home? (Less than 12 months): If you just moved to Lubbock or have lived in your home for less than a year, we strongly recommend sticking with Truly Fixed plan.
Why: Without a full year of usage history, you do not know how your home will handle the Texas heat in August or the cold snaps in February. A fixed rate helps protect you from large price swings during those unpredictable months.

  • Lived there for a year or more? (Use Your Data): If you have at least 12 months of history in the same location, you can stop guessing. Over 90% of Texas homes are equipped with Smart Meters, which record your electricity usage every 15 minutes.

Take advantage of our Analysis Tool: Our system can compare every available plan against your actual usage history. This is extremely valuable for checking whether Free Nights or Free Weekends plans are really saving you money, or whether a Truly Fixed rate is still your cheapest option. To use this tool, sign in or create an account and compare more the 200 plans in Lubbock

What Happens If You Cancel Your Electricity Contract Early in Lubbock?

If you cancel your electricity contract before it expires, you will usually have to pay an early termination fee. In many cases, that fee is around $100 to $150 for a 12-month plan, and $200 or more for a 24-month plan or longer. The exact amount depends on your provider and the terms of your contract.

Even so, paying the cancellation fee can sometimes still be the better financial move. A lot of people in Texas, especially those who are not familiar with how the market works, end up paying far too much for electricity. If your current plan is costing you much more than the best plans available today, switching early may still save you money even after the cancellation fee.

For example, if you are overpaying by more than $500 over the remaining life of your contract, canceling may be worth it. In some cases, the savings can be much higher.

How do you know if canceling makes sense?
The only way to know for sure is to compare:
  •  your current plan
  •  the early termination fee
  •  the best plans currently available in Lubbock

We created a comparison tool only for that purpose. The full process is explained in this article:  Can You Save Money Switching Electricity Providers?

In that guide, we show you how to compare your current plan against the best options in the market. Our tool helps you estimate how much you would pay if you stay, how much you would pay if you switch, and whether you would actually save money after the cancellation fee.
