How Much Power Do Texas Batteries Send to the Grid?

Texas batteries have delivered as much as 11,654 MW to the grid at a single moment, a record set at 8:30 PM CT on August 9, 2026. Across all of 2025 they discharged 6.7 million MWh, more than double the year before. Those numbers come from ERCOT's own reporting and they have climbed every year since batteries first showed up as a separate category.

Texas has added battery storage at a remarkable pace since 2024. Utility-scale projects have come online across the state, and companies such as Base Power have built a different model, installing batteries in homes and operating them together as one fleet that sells power back to the grid during the most expensive hours of the day. Both approaches earn money the same way, by charging when electricity is cheap and discharging when it is scarce, and both push in the same direction: more supply during the evening peak, when the grid is under the most stress. That extra supply helps keep prices from climbing as high when demand peaks.

Batteries and real-time prices

When do Texas batteries charge and discharge?

Battery operators charge when wholesale electricity is cheap and discharge when it is expensive.

The top chart shows the real time wholesale price at the load zone you select. ERCOT splits the state into load zones and prices can differ between them, so pick the one closest to where you live. As a rough guide, LZ_HOUSTON covers the CenterPoint area, LZ_NORTH covers most of Oncor, LZ_SOUTH covers AEP Texas Central, and LZ_WEST covers AEP Texas North. This is a simplification on our part. Zone boundaries do not follow utility service areas exactly, so depending on your address a different zone may apply.

Data sources: Battery charge and discharge figures come from ERCOT's Fuel Mix Report. Wholesale prices come from ERCOT's Historical RTM Load Zone and Hub Prices (NP6-785-ER). Each battery interval is matched to the real time price for the same interval at the selected load zone. Prices are shown as originally published by ERCOT and are not adjusted for later corrections.

A quick guide to reading the battery output, price, and downloadable data on this page.

What does negative battery output mean?
Negative output means the battery fleet is charging and absorbing electricity from the ERCOT grid. Positive output means batteries are discharging electricity back to the grid.
When do Texas batteries usually charge and discharge?
Charging commonly occurs around midday when solar generation is high and prices are lower. Discharging often increases during the evening as solar output falls and demand remains high, although conditions vary by day.
Why does the wholesale price change by load zone?
ERCOT load-zone prices can differ because transmission limits and local grid conditions affect the cost of serving electricity in each part of Texas.
Do the downloads contain more data than the charts?
No. Each CSV contains the values displayed in its chart. The daily download follows the selected day and load zone and includes both the price line and battery-output bars.
Where does this data come from?
Battery data come from ERCOT fuel-mix and Energy Storage Resources reporting. Daily wholesale prices come from ERCOT's historical Real-Time Market load-zone price records.
