How the Home Battery Calculator Works

Step-by-step Guide

How to Download Your Smart Meter Texas Data

To compare Free Nights electricity plans, you first need your Smart Meter Texas usage file. This file shows your electricity usage in 15-minute intervals, which helps estimate how much energy you use during the free-night window.

Step 1: Go to Smart Meter Texas

Go directly to SmartMeterTexas.com and log in with your username and password.

If you do not have an account yet, you will need to create one first. Most Texas homes already have a smart meter, so most users should be able to access this data.

Step 2: Request and Export 15-minute Data

  • Select report type: Energy Data — 15 Minute Interval.
  • Select your start date (we recommend about one year ago) and set end date to today.
  • Click Export My Report.

This generates a CSV file. If you have a full year of data, the file may be around 3 MB. If you recently moved into your home or apartment, your file may be smaller because there is less usage history available.

About the Home Battery Calculator

The Home Battery Calculator is a free tool built by Clear Energy Facts to help Texans understand what a home backup battery can really do for them during a grid outage.

Marketing pages usually quote a single "hours of backup" number. In reality, backup time depends on your home's actual consumption pattern, the season, the hour the outage starts, and how much you cut back once the power is out. This tool lets you test all of that with real interval data.

Methodology

The simulation uses 15-minute interval usage data — either your own Smart Meter Texas export or a typical profile for your home size. Only consumption intervals are used; surplus solar generation rows are excluded, and duplicate readings for the same interval are summed.

Starting at the outage date and hour you select, the simulator subtracts each 15-minute interval's usage (scaled by your chosen consumption level) from the battery's stored energy until it reaches zero. The year in your data is ignored: what matters is the seasonal and daily usage pattern.

Battery capacities are the manufacturers' published usable energy figures. We assume no recharging during the outage — no solar and no grid — which makes this a conservative, worst-case style estimate for solar-paired systems.

What is the Home Battery Calculator?

How does the simulation work?
We take your home's usage in 15-minute intervals and subtract it from the battery's stored energy, starting at the outage date and hour you pick. The graph shows the battery charge dropping interval by interval until it runs out, and the summary tells you how many hours or days it lasted.
Which data option should I choose?
If you have your Smart Meter Texas interval CSV, upload it — the simulation will follow your home's real usage pattern. If you don't, pick your home size and we use a typical Texas usage profile with similar seasonal and daily shapes.
What does the consumption slider do?
It scales your usage during the outage. At 100% you keep living exactly as usual; at 50% you use half as much electricity, for example by raising the thermostat, skipping laundry, and turning off non-essential loads. Lower consumption makes the battery last much longer.
Why does the outage start date matter?
Your usage changes a lot by season and by hour. An outage starting on an August afternoon, with air conditioning running hard, drains a battery far faster than one starting on a mild April night. The simulator uses the usage pattern from the date and hour you select.
Does this calculator guarantee how long my battery will last?
No. It is an estimate based on past usage data and the battery's usable capacity. Real outage performance depends on weather, battery health, inverter limits, and what you actually run during the outage. Use it as a planning guide, not a guarantee.
