Constellation Review and Ratings

Last updated:

Constellation currently holds a Clear Energy Facts Score of 4.2 out of 5. This places them at rank #6 out of 42. Three factors were evaluated: plan quality, pricing transparency, and customer service.

Constellation is a national energy giant (a Fortune 200 company) serving the Texas market and currently stands as the nation's largest producer of carbon-free energy.

Constellation: What we like

  1. BBB accreditation: Constellation is a BBB-accredited business with an A+ rating.
  2. Established and trusted provider: It is a well-established company and earned the 2025 Great Place To Work® certification. Constellation also states that it is one of the largest producers of carbon-free energy in the United States.
  3. Consistent pricing: Rates are generally consistent across shopping platforms, making it easier to find their best offers regardless of where you compare plans.
  4. ETF assistance: They offer assistance with early termination fees when switching from another provider, covering up to $150. Learn more here.
  5. HVAC protection add-on: Several plans can be bundled with HVAC protection. This perk can be useful for small to medium repairs, but customers should carefully review coverage limits and exclusions. As of December 2025, coverage is capped at $2,000 with a $0 deductible, and certain items such as refrigerant (freon) leaks are not covered. Overall, this is a valuable add-on when its limitations are clearly understood. Learn more here.
  6. Low cancellation fees: Their cancellation fees are lower than the industry average.
  7. Strong referral program: Constellation offers a referral program where both you and your friend can receive a $50 gift card after signup. Learn more here.

Constellation: What we don’t like

  1. HVAC program limitations: Some users have reported dissatisfaction with the HVAC protection program, which makes it important to carefully review the Terms of Service and set realistic expectations. Understanding coverage limits and exclusions is essential before enrolling.
  2. Call center payment fee: A $6.95 fee applies if a customer chooses to make a payment through a call center agent instead of using self-service payment options.
  3. Heavy promotion of bill credit plans: Many of their most advertised rates are tied to bill credit plans with specific electricity usage thresholds. These plans can lead to inconsistent bills and higher effective rates if your usage falls outside the required range.
  4. Higher-priced True Fixed plans: While True Fixed Rate plans are available, their pricing is generally higher than the current market average.
  5. Mobile App Frustrations: The Constellation Energy Hub app is currently rated low across app stores. The app is relatively new, and improvements are expected as future updates are released.

How We Rate This Company

  • PUCT Rating: This is the official scorecard published by the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT).
  • Plan & Rates: We evaluate each company’s electricity rates by giving more weight to clear True Fixed plans and less weight to other fixed-type plans, using average prices across different contract lengths. Companies with lower average rates score higher, and we exclude complex or gimmicky offers that require special equipment (like smart thermostats, EV devices, seasonal pricing, or “highest usage day” rewards).
  • Cancellation Fees: We compare each plan’s early termination fee against similar plans from other providers and normalize the data. Lower cancellation fees per contract term result in better scores.
  • Transparency: We check how consistently the provider displays prices across the main shopping channels Texans use: Power to Choose, the company’s own website, and Google Ads. If the prices match across these places, the transparency score goes up. If the company advertises one price but charges something different on its site, the score goes down.
  • CEF Score: The overall Clear Energy Facts score is a weighted average of these sub-scores, giving you a single number you can use to compare providers side by side.

Data note: Except for the PUCT Rating (which comes directly from the official PUCT scorecard), all CEF scores are calculated using real, up-to-date plan data from each provider. We recalculate these scores regularly using current Electricity Facts Labels and plan details — we don’t guess or use hidden assumptions.

Clear Energy Facts ratings focus on plan structure, transparency, and pricing. They do not include direct customer service scores. For that, we recommend checking recent Google Reviews and other independent sources, and being cautious with “star ratings” shown on sponsored comparison sites.

Transparency Review in Detail

5.0 /5.0

Transparency

Ranked #1 of 42 companies

Constellation obtains the highest transparency score because its rates and plans are largely consistent across all platforms, including its website, sponsored content on Google, and the Power to Choose marketplace. While minor differences between rates on Power to Choose and the company’s website can occasionally occur, these variations are typically less than 3%.

Customer Service Review in Detail

4.0 /5.0

PUCT complaint record

Ranked #6 of 42 companies

In this section we focus on the company’s customer service, using the official complaint data from the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT).

1. PUCT scorecard rating. This score shows how this provider compares to other Texas electricity companies based on the number of customer complaints the PUCT receives about them.

2. What the PUCT scorecard means. The PUCT publishes a scorecard that rates Retail Electric Providers based on their complaint history. It compares a company's market share to its share of complaints filed with the state. Companies that resolve issues before customers feel the need to contact the PUCT receive higher ratings (5 Power Circles), while companies that frequently force customers to escalate issues receive lower ratings.

If a company does not have a PUCT rating (or we show “No rating”), it usually means there is not enough historical data for the PUCT to calculate a score. This typically happens when a company is new to the market or has a customer base too small to be statistically compared to larger providers.
