At first, this may sound attractive, especially if you own a home and are worried about expensive AC repairs. But before looking at the protection bundle, we need to start with the biggest problem:
When You Should Not Use This Plan
- If you live in an apartment or a small house, this plan is probably not for you. The reason is simple: this plan depends heavily on usage credits. If you do not reach the required usage levels, you leave money on the table. The EFL shows a $35 residential usage credit when usage is at least 1,000 kWh, plus an additional $15 credit when usage is at least 2,000 kWh. That means the plan looks much better at 1,000 kWh and 2,000 kWh than it may look at lower usage levels.
- For apartments, townhomes, and smaller homes under roughly 1,500 square feet, it is very possible to stay below 1,000 kWh for several months of the year. If that happens, you miss the credit and your effective rate becomes much higher.
- So before even analyzing the AC protection bundle, the first warning is clear: If you cannot consistently reach 1,000 kWh, stay away from this plan.
What if you have a 2,000+ sq. ft. house?
How much extra are you paying for the AC protection bundle?
Once we estimate that difference, we can decide whether the added AC and home protection coverage is worth the higher electricity cost.
The data for this Constellation plan is collected directly from the offer shown on Constellation’s website and the Electricity Facts Label. This data is usually reviewed at least once per month. The True Fixed plans used for comparison are usually checked every 48 hours. Their pricing is collected either from Power to Choose or directly from the electricity provider’s website.
This comparison is based on the Oncor service area. However, the cost difference between this type of bundled plan and competitive True Fixed plans is usually similar across other TDUs.

AC Protect vs Competitive True Fixed Plan (Oncor)
As you can see from the curve above, there is a significant difference between the two plans. The AC Protect plan is more expensive than a competitive True Fixed plan across many usage levels.
The table below shows the estimated monthly bill based on different usage levels. The green value in each column represents the cheaper option at that usage level. Both plans are shown together so you can clearly see the difference.

Is the AC Protection Worth the Extra Cost?
So the real question is not whether AC protection has value. The question is:
AC Protect Pros
- Service protection for AC systems
- Coverage tied directly to a reputable electricity provider
- Potentially easier customer service than some traditional home warranty companies
- Annual efficiency tune-up
- Protection for expensive AC-related repairs, subject to the plan limits and exclusions
Constellation also has a stronger brand reputation than many home warranty companies. That matters because one of the biggest complaints with home warranty providers is claim delays, denied claims, and poor service experience. If you already know you want some type of AC protection, getting it through Constellation may feel more reliable than buying it from a lower-rated warranty company. But that does not automatically mean the plan is a good deal.
AC Protect Cons
- The electricity plan is still a bill-credit plan
- You may miss the 1,000 kWh or 2,000 kWh credits in some months
- The repair coverage may be capped
- Some parts or services may not be included
- You may need to use Constellation’s service process instead of choosing your own contractor
- If the AC system has a major failure, the coverage may not be enough to cover the full replacement cost
Who Might Consider This Plan?
- Your home is around 2,000–2,500 square feet or larger
- You consistently use more than 1,000 kWh
- You are worried about AC repair costs
- You do not want to shop separately for a home warranty
- You prefer dealing with Constellation instead of a traditional warranty company
Who Should Avoid This Plan?
- You live in an apartment
- You live in a small home
- Your usage often falls below 1,000 kWh
- You dislike bill-credit plans
- You would rather save the monthly difference yourself for future repairs
