Amigo Energy: What we like

- Amigo Energy is part of the Fulcrum Retail Energy LLC family. Being backed by a larger group often provides more stability and customer service infrastructure compared to smaller providers.
- They offer a diverse portfolio of plans for every need, including Fixed-Rate, Bill Credit, Free Nights, Free Weekends, and Seasonal options.
Amigo Energy: What we don’t like
- On some plans, they charge a minimum usage fee for consumption below specific thresholds (e.g., 400 kWh). This threshold is often set strategically just below the 500 kWh disclosure level. While this fee is listed in the EFL, it is not reflected in the advertised 500 kWh rate, which can lead to higher-than-expected bills for low-usage customers.
- For short-term plans found on Power to Choose (like the Sustainable Simply Days - 3), they charge a high one-time fee (e.g., $49.99) but only factor 1/12th of that cost into the advertised rate. This artificially lowers the displayed price to rank higher in search results, even though the customer pays the full fee for a 3-month contract. Because of this deceptive math, these plans often fail our validation filters.
- They show different plans and different prices depending on how you reach their site; whether you click a Google-sponsored ad or visit their regular website. Because the offers don’t always match, it can be hard for customers to know which rate is truly the best one.
- The most competitive plans are typically offered exclusively through the Power to Choose state marketplace and are often not listed on their own main website.

- PUCT Rating: This is the official scorecard published by the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT).
- Plan & Rates: We evaluate each company’s electricity rates by giving more weight to clear True Fixed plans and less weight to other fixed-type plans, using average prices across different contract lengths. Companies with lower average rates score higher, and we exclude complex or gimmicky offers that require special equipment (like smart thermostats, EV devices, seasonal pricing, or “highest usage day” rewards).
- Cancellation Fees: We compare each plan’s early termination fee against similar plans from other providers and normalize the data. Lower cancellation fees per contract term result in better scores.
- Transparency: We check how consistently the provider displays prices across the main shopping channels Texans use: Power to Choose, the company’s own website, and Google Ads. If the prices match across these places, the transparency score goes up. If the company advertises one price but charges something different on its site, the score goes down.
- CEF Score: The overall Clear Energy Facts score is a weighted average of these sub-scores, giving you a single number you can use to compare providers side by side.
