Atlantex Power vs TXU: which one is cheaper

Last updated:

Atlantex Power is one of the cheapest and most competitive electricity providers in Texas, while TXU Energy is one of the most expensive. But how big is the difference?

Atlantex and TXU are two very different electricity providers in Texas. TXU is one of the biggest names in the market, and many customers continue renewing with them every year. Atlantex, on the other hand, is a smaller provider but offers some of the most competitive and transparent rates available today. In this comparison, we will quantify with real numbers how much you may overpay by choosing TXU Energy instead of Atlantex Power, using Atlantex Luminous Green as the main benchmark plan.

Remember, in Texas, the electricity provider is mostly the company that collects your bill. The utility still delivers the electricity, maintains the power lines, and handles outages. Because of that, we are going to look at the real situations where you may actually need to interact with customer service. If you pay on time and set up your account correctly, there is usually not much difference between one provider and another after enrollment. That is something many customers do not realize, and they end up overpaying for companies that appear to offer better customer service, even though they may rarely need to contact customer service at all. Now let’s focus on the main areas where customer service or provider differences may matter.

  • Plan and Rates: This is a total advantage for Atlantex, and it is not even close. Atlantex fixed-rate plans, free-night plans, and free-weekend plans are transparent and consistently competitive across different plan types. TXU is very different. Many TXU plans rely on gimmicks, “rewards,” seasonal pricing, tiered rates, bill credits, or other structures that may look attractive but usually do not lower your bill in a meaningful way. You can check our main TXU review and see how poorly they perform in transparency and plan-rate competitiveness. For free nights, Atlantex has one of the strongest 12-hour plans in the market, while TXU is not close in competitiveness.
  • Enrollment: Both companies have an easy enrollment process. You can set up the account online, enroll in autopay, and manage the basic account setup without much difficulty. In this category, there is not a major difference between both providers.
  • Customer Service: TXU has the advantage with 24/7 customer service. That is a real perk, and for some customers it may be valuable. However, after enrollment, most customers will not need to interact with customer service very often. In most cases, you will set up your account, pay your bill, and continue using electricity without needing much support. Because of that, it usually does not make sense to overpay 20%, 30%, or even more just for customer service that you may never actually need.
  • Non-Recurring Fees: Both companies perform reasonably well in this section. Non-recurring fees are charges related to things like disconnection, reconnection, or missed payment deadlines. These fees can be aggressive if you miss a payment or fail to meet a deadline, but unfortunately, this is common across the Texas electricity market. The best way to avoid these charges is to set up autopay, keep payment information updated, and avoid waiting until the last day to pay the bill.

How Much Will You Overpay by Selecting TXU Instead of Atlantex?

Now let’s make a quantitative analysis of the prices. We will compare the best true fixed-rate plan from Atlantex with the best true fixed-rate plan from TXU.

The data comes directly from each provider’s website. In some cases, prices may change depending on whether you enter through a Google sponsored link, a partner website, or a third-party marketplace. Because of that, we show the actual plan cards used in this comparison and include the last updated date. These rates are checked regularly, usually at least once per week. This comparison reflects rates for the Dallas / Oncor area for contract terms between 12 and 24 months. The price gap between these two providers remains relatively consistent across other term lengths and TDU service areas.

Key Differences Between the Plans

TXU has a monthly base charge, while Atlantex does not. This is not ideal for apartment customers or low-usage customers. In TXU’s case, the $10 monthly base charge is especially high and can significantly increase the effective rate for small apartments or customers who use less electricity. TXU also has a significantly higher energy rate. This rate is usually around 20% higher than the Atlantex Luminous Green plan, before even considering the monthly base charge.

In the graph above, you can see the difference in rate between both plans. This difference is significant, and with TXU you may overpay by at least 20%. To visualize this in a better way, you can refer to the table below. The next table estimates the monthly bill based on your electricity usage. The green value in each column shows the lower bill at that usage level. Both plans are displayed one below the other, making it easier to compare the cost difference. You can also switch between service areas, or TDUs, to see how the results change. These calculations are based on the Electricity Facts Label for each plan in each TDU.

What About Free Nights and Free Weekends?

Atlantex also outperforms TXU in both free-night and free-weekend plans by a wide margin. You can check our free-night and free-weekend pages and compare the ranking of each provider. TXU is simply not competitive in these categories, and most customers will overpay when compared with stronger alternatives. On the other hand, Atlantex has strong rates for both plan types. You can also check our Atlantex free-weekend review here, our Atlantex free-night review here, and our TXU free-night review here. These reviews explain how competitive each plan is when compared with a top 10 competitive true fixed-rate plan.

In Summary:

TXU is one of the most expensive electricity providers in Texas. They offer some useful perks, such as 24/7 customer service, but it usually does not make sense to overpay for a service you may rarely use. In the bill comparison table, you can see that if you have a medium or large home and consume around 2,000 kWh or more on average, the difference in the bill can easily be $100 or more per month. That is more than $1,000 in overpayment through the year. Atlantex, on the other hand, is one of the cheapest and most competitive providers in the market. With Atlantex, you can get competitive prices with the confidence that the company will honor the contract, instead of relying on risky ultra-cheap providers that may look good on Power to Choose but do not always provide the same level of stability.
