Reliant vs TXU: Which Electricity Provider Is Cheaper in Texas?

Last updated:

See whether Reliant or TXU is cheaper. Compare fixed-rate and free-night plans with bill graphs by TDU zone for apartments, large homes, and different usage levels.

TXU and Reliant are both well-known electricity providers in Texas. Their strongest advantage is not usually price, but stability, brand recognition, and customer service. Many customers still prefer them because they feel more comfortable choosing a large, established company with strong support and fewer surprises.

Before going deeper, it is important to separate two things: customer service and price. TXU and Reliant are large, established providers with strong brand recognition and customer support. However, if your main priority is finding the lowest electricity rate, their plans are often not the cheapest option in the market. That is why this comparison focuses strictly on price, plan structure, and estimated monthly bills.

For this comparison, we focus on plans that target similar types of customers. We compare:
  1. Apartment usage
  2. Large home usage
  3. Time-of-use / free-night plans

The data comes directly from each provider’s website. In some cases, prices may change depending on whether you enter through a Google sponsored link, a partner website, or a third-party marketplace. Because of that, we show the actual plan cards used in this comparison and include the last updated date. These rates are checked regularly, usually at least once per week.
This comparison reflects rates for the Dallas / Oncor area for contract terms between 12 and 24 months. The price gap between these two providers remains relatively consistent across other term lengths and TDU service areas.

Key Differences Between the Plans

  • Both plans include a base charge. This is not ideal for apartment customers, especially because the Reliant plan appears to target apartment usage. A fixed monthly charge can make the plan less attractive for low-usage customers. In TXU’s case, the $10 monthly base charge is especially high and can significantly increase the effective rate for small apartments or customers who use less electricity.
  • Reliant’s apartment plan is tiered. After a certain usage threshold, usually around 1,000 kWh, the plan becomes more expensive. This means it may work better for studio or small apartment customers who stay below 1,000 kWh most of the year, including winter and summer.
  • TXU’s One Rate plan keeps the price more stable. The rate structure is simpler and does not change as much based on usage level. However, the rate is usually higher than many other plans available in the market.
  • Both plans are expensive compared with the cheapest True Fixed plans. In many cases, they can cost more than 20% above the lowest competitive fixed-rate plans in the market. This is important context before choosing either option.

The next table estimates the monthly bill based on your electricity usage. The green value in each column shows the lower bill at that usage level. Both plans are displayed one below the other, making it easier to compare the cost difference. You can also switch between service areas (TDUs) to see how the results change. These calculations are based on the Electricity Facts Label (EFL) for each plan in each TDU.

Key Differences Between Both Plans

Even though both plans offer an 8-hour free window, the free period starts at different times.
TXU’s free-night plan usually starts at 8:00 p.m., while Reliant’s starts at 9:00 p.m. This gives TXU a small advantage for busy households, because the 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. hour can be easier to use for laundry, cooking, dishwashing, or other high-consumption activities.
Another important difference is that TXU’s free period is not completely free. You still have to pay TDU delivery charges during the free window.
One nice perk of the Reliant plan is that it does not include a base charge. Because of that, this plan could work well for apartment customers, as long as they are able to shift a meaningful portion of their electricity usage into the free window. In contrast, TXU does include a monthly base charge, specifically $10, which makes the plan less attractive for low-usage customers.

Summary on Free Nights

Reliant’s free-night plan is better than TXU’s in this comparison. It has no base charge, offers a truly free-night period, and its daytime energy charge is not as high as TXU’s. For these reasons, Reliant is the better option between the two.
Nevertheless, always check the full list of the best free-night plans, because there may be other plans in the market that offer better value than both Reliant and TXU.

Final summary

Reliant and TXU are two of the most popular and well-known electricity companies in Texas. If you want to choose between these two, Reliant currently offers better prices in most cases.
