Shopping for electricity in Texas is a challenge. Consumers usually face two very different paths:

  • Should you focus on finding the cheapest electricity plan available?,  or
  • Should you choose a company with the best customer service, even if it costs more?

If you are considering the second option, an important question follows. How much does good customer service actually cost?

In this analysis, we focus exclusively on customer service, not on finding the lowest advertised rates. We compare the electricity providers that deliver the best overall customer service experience in Texas, and we also show how much of a premium you are paying compared to the cheapest plans in the market.

How We Selected the Companies
We evaluated providers using three core factors that matter most when paying for premium service.

First Filter: Minimum Requirements
To qualify, a company had to meet all of the following criteria.
  • 24/7 Customer Support and Strong Customer Service Reviews: The provider must offer 24/7 customer support and demonstrate consistently strong feedback on Google reviews. Our analysis focused strictly on customer service related issues such as long wait times, knowledgeable representatives, responsiveness, and availability. Complaints related to high electricity bills were excluded from this evaluation.
  • Mobile App Experience: If you are paying more for electricity, the digital experience should match the price. The provider must offer a mobile app with strong usability and reliability, including features such as bill payment, autopay setup, real time and hourly usage tracking, usage alerts, and overall platform stability.
  • PUCT Rating of 4 or Higher
The Public Utility Commission of Texas complaint rating is a critical metric. It measures how many complaints a company receives relative to its customer base. To qualify, a provider had to maintain a perfect or near perfect PUCT score over time.

Finalists After Initial Filtering

Based on the criteria above, the following companies made the first cut.
  1. Reliant
  2. TXU Energy
  3. Green Mountain Energy
  4. Champion Energy
  5. Direct Energy

Honorable Mentions:
BKV Energy, CleanSky Energy, and GoodCharlie narrowly missed the cutoff because they do not offer 24/7 customer service. That said, their overall customer experience is excellent, and they offer competitive rates that perform very well in our CEF Score. They remain strong options worth reviewing separately.

Mobile App Quality Elimination Round

Since this is a premium service comparison, the mobile experience matters.
Two companies were eliminated at this stage due to consistently low app ratings.
  • TXU Energy
  • Champion Energy
This left us with the final three providers.

Finalists

  • Reliant
  • Direct Energy
  • Green Mountain Energy

One important thing these three companies have in common is affordability. As of December 2025, all three rank near the bottom when compared to more than forty providers on price alone. These are not cheap electricity plans.
We also tested customer service ourselves. In all three cases, call wait times were under two minutes.

Reliant Energy

Reliant offers one of the strongest customer service experiences in the Texas electricity market.
Complaints about long wait times are rare, and customer support is consistently available. The PUCT score remains above 4, which is impressive given Reliant’s large customer base.
The mobile app is one of the best available. If you are tech savvy and like to manage everything from your phone, including usage tracking and billing, this app performs extremely well.

The Winner – Final Conclusion:

On paper, Reliant Energy, Green Mountain Energy, and Direct Energy offer very similar perks that position them among the top providers for customer service. However, offering the same features does not automatically mean delivering the same level of service in practice.
In recent months, Direct Energy has experienced a noticeable increase in customer complaints and negative Google reviews. Despite offering perks comparable to Reliant and Green Mountain, many customers report issues related to lack of transparency and unsatisfactory customer service interactions.
For these reasons, we selected Reliant Energy and Green Mountain Energy as the best customer service electricity providers for 2025.
That said, it’s important to understand the trade-off. Choosing either of these providers typically means paying around 20% more than the overall market average. For a typical 2,500-square-foot home, this premium can easily exceed $1,000 per year.

Is it worth it?

In our opinion, no—for most consumers.
Texas electricity is unique. The company selling your electricity is not the company delivering it. Power outages and infrastructure issues are handled by utilities such as Oncor or CenterPoint Energy, not by your retail electricity provider. As a result, excellent customer service does not necessarily translate into faster power restoration or fewer outages.
That said, if you highly value immediate support, minimal wait times, and some of the best mobile apps in the market—and you don’t mind paying extra—these providers do deliver on that promise.
For most consumers, however, there are many electricity companies that offer very good customer service at significantly better rates. We recommend reviewing our full provider rankings to find the best balance between price and service.
